Young people for public transport
February 14th 2009 08:39
It's not a new organisation, it's a fact. Young people -whether out of necessity or herd mentality- are flocking to public transport.
If you ask the youth of today about automobiles, you're most likely to get an answer that goes something like this; A car? What, like a Koenigsegg CCX? It's totally something I aspire to but it's not something I own. Something cheaper? More practical? Ugh, how boring and anyway, still costs a few thousand even for a used car. I can't save up that much- I need that money for going out.
Because of this, public transport is generally sourced for all general transition purposes.
If you're bit cash strapped and need to buy a mate a present, how about a bus time table? They'd appreciate knowing if there's a way to shave 10 minutes off their commute to work, especially in the early hours of the morning when it's cold and wet *cough* like now *cough*.
Unfortunately for all patrons of public transport, such reliance on government provided movement utilities may become a bit less favourable. I believe fares have been raised by 7% (in New South Wales), thank you Nathan Reese, and I hear there's talk of charging to park around train stations, so if you own a car but want to be like your friends and train it, you're going to be paying double.
Maybe it's time to stand out from the pack, disappear from the social scene for a bit and get yourself a car. For added individualism, you can use it as your only means of transport from Point A to Point B. Take that, City Rail!
