Pornography Leads To Rape

Keep your decibels moderate; the purpose of such a bold heading was to get your attention.
When I came online today, Yahoo had a news headline that went like this "Boys record rape of Girl, 10, on mobile". LINK. The gist of the article is that two 11 year old boys enacted scenes from a porn film they had watched.
I was obviously appalled but I was not planning to shout "ban porn" from the roof tops. Perhaps this was an isolated case, the majority shouldn't suffer because of the minority's faults. So I was not going to jump on said band wagon but I decided this topic was worth blogging about... trouble is the people in question are from Generation Z. I needed to research the effects of pornography on Generation Y.
If you live in Australia, I'm assuming you're aware of the intervention that was started last year by the Howard Government among Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory. If not, basically the health, education and socioeconomic conditions were unacceptable and the government sent police, social workers, healthcare professionals etc to the area to combat the problems. One report titled Little Children Are Sacred LINK highlights the links between sexual offenders (Generation Yers included) and pornography. The investigation this report was based on found that 1/3 sex offenders had viewed pornographic material before offending.
As with the case above, many of the attacks committed in Northern Territory indigenous communities were primed by viewing sexually explicit material;
Before I go any further, I wish to state (and so too does the aforementioned report) that this problem goes beyond the Indigenous community, however because the wider community has not been the subject of such an intervention, the full magnitude of the problem is still unknown.
So Generation Y, what do we do? There are those among us that link pornography to rape and as with the first case I mentioned, there are such people in Generation Z as well. When it's our time to be CEOs, political figures and social workers, what are we going to do? Surly some of us a wondering where are the parents of these minors and who gave them access to pornographic material. And then we have the issue of pornography itself- should it be banned altogether, does it degrade women and children? There was a book called The Porn File that I saw which addressed these questions but I didn’t buy it. I now regret my decision. If you’ve read it or have any thoughts you’d like to share, I and all of cyberspace am all ears.

It was … confirmed … that pornography was a major factor in communities and that it should be stopped. The daily diet of sexually explicit material has had a major impact, presenting young and adolescent Aboriginals with a view of mainstream sexual practice and behaviour which is jaundiced. It encourages them to act out the fantasies they see on screen or in magazines. Exposure to pornography was also blamed for the sexualised behaviour evident in quite young children.

Sigh, look to parents that abdicated their thrones, especially dad's; therein lays the weak link in this tragedy.

This reminds me of that saying "there are 3 kinds of lies; lies, damn lies and statistics".
