Goodbye Christianity

December 21st 2007 05:16
Christianity is the big one. Yes, there are other religions but in my opinion this is the one that had the most followers. If at anytime you want to tell me where to stick my misinformation, please go ahead, but for the purposes of this blog entry we'll be operating under the assumption that this is the supreme religion in terms of pulling power... sort of.

Just 4 days out of Xmas the head of the Anglican Church has told us that the Xmas story of the 3 wise Kings in a myth; non-believers were celebrating everywhere. If you think I'm blaspheming just for the sake of it please click this to read the story.

I'd stop there, but seeing as I'm on a roll I think I'll just keep going.

I went to a Catholic primary school, but this didn't stop our Priest from gathering us round and telling us that the story of Adam and Eve "is just a story". Seriously. Seeing as technology has yet not provided us with a way of creating URLs to people's memories, I can't show you the proof so you're just going to have to take my word for it that this really happened.

Okay, so say you've read the above article and accepted that our school's priest denounced a part of the Bible, so what? How does this tie in with Gen Y? Well I'm glad you asked, my dear. The point I'm trying to make is that Christianity is going down the pan. If we can pick and chose what to believe, what weight do arguments against abortion and homosexual marriage have when based on the Bible? I mean maybe Adam and Eve didn't happen but Adam and Steve did, lol. But all heresy aside, it seems that Generation Y is well on the way to being Generation Religion takes a Back Seat when it comes to Everything and I personally see this as a good thing. In my opinion religion has been used as a buffet with the convenient pieces used as justification and the non-so convenient bits have been forgotten. Now while we're still quite a way away from all religion being discarded, I do think that such goings on within Christianity have certainly started something big.

Christmas is an oddball for Christianity, it happens on the same day as a pagan celebration (and apparently was moved there to blend pagans with Christianity), while evidence suggests Jesus was born in Spring (I think it was spring) his birthday is celebrated in Winter.

Then there's the whole santa claus thing, which is a lie through and through.

Ultimately Christmas has more in common with pagan winter celebrations, not Christs birthday.

I wouldn't say Christianity is going down the pan, Christianity is reimagining itself, you can thank religous institutions for that. There's a very good reason a whole lot of 'christian' celebrations actually coincide with pagan rituals. It all has to do with religous institutions desperation to gather more members, in the end by behaving in this manner they do, by saying 'well this is a myth, this is different, this is that, that is this' people can more readily believe Christianity.

It started off as convenience most likely, re-writing stories andwhatnot to make them sound better, then as the glaring holes in the re-written stories started showing up it became a matter of need to explain them away. Then of course the same principle was applied to blend other rleigions with Christianity. Explaining various concepts away to get more followers.

I won't try to preech to you but I may be able to fill in a bit of history for you.

Several thing have happened over the last 40 years on the religious front for most of the main stream established Christian religions.

The most obvious has been social change that given rise to a culture shift for western society. From post war struggling to make ends meet to comfortable consumerism. Comercialism is everywhere and competeing for loyalty with the tradidionals (Catholics included)

Less obvious is the ideology of Modernism in the western world. (Revolution Theology was more of a South American fad so I won't say much about it)
Basically modernnism gained momentum at the same time that consumerism gained momentum but I won't say that they are entirely linked. Modernist theology is the belief that religous priciple should adapt to match the modern world. That is that even fundamental truths must also adapt if required. This attitude spread very quickly and was documented in several reports. The Ratsinger Report is the most famous.

With the new modernism came the culmination of questioning everything and teaching everything.

In Australia this led to the accusation that mainstream Christian schools could produce accademic excellence but theological illiterates. Hence you cannot love what you do not know.

Much of the Modernist movement has worn itself out as the experiments failed to produce the increase in attendances that they promised. The heros of modernism are getting older and more tired. But the battle lives on. Modernism verses the traditional.

Am I boring you yet?

So there is no easy answer here other than reserach about what is official teaching and what is claimed to be official teaching. Everyone will tell what they think is correct but the only way you are going to find out it to go to the official sources and read.

That way you will know what you agree and disagree with.

Sorry said too much.
