When It Comes To Cars, We're All Over The Place
October 1st 2008 14:04
Ahh the motor vehicle- what a gorgeous, spectacular thing to own. Do we not all dream of laying claim to such an invention? Shockingly, the answer is no. While some of us (like our New Zealand brethren) have jumped at the chance to become car owners, others (such as our US variety Gen Yers) have shrugged off this purchase. Who drives what? What are their reasons and more, all in this explosive edition of Generation Y Life: Culture and Perspective!
We start with the traitors.
In the US, it seems our compatriots have found a new way of rebelling against their Baby Boomer parents; they're not buying cars. While Baby Boomers saw cars as necessary for mobility, the US's version of young people today have decided the train will do just fine. It costs less and can take you anywhere... well, almost. If you need to visit a hillbilly relative somewhere far away from civilisation and thus are in need of wheels, a company called Zipcar can help you. They rent cars by the hour and because they’re sneaky serpents, they've targeted Generation Y directly by making their service available to all persons over 18 as opposed to other company’s requirement of at least 25 years life experience. They also have something called 'green benefits' to make you feel like you're doing your bit for the environment by driving instead of taking public transport, and also have something called 'university partners', thus demonstrating how far into Gen Y they've sunk their marketing hooks. Bastards.
*deep breath* Marketing and I don't get along you see, so let's move on.
In New Zealand, where the people are more to my liking, car ownership is at an all time high. Spectacular. Um, at this point I was unable to find any further information on the matter and if you think I'm doing any in-depth research into the matter I'll advise you to get off the drugs. Car ownership has gone up. The population is expanding. These two things can be joined and made to mean that there are a larger proportion of young people and more of them are motorists. There you have it, a fact, and no research was required. More things need to be this simple.
Back home where 'environment' is the new buzzword and green is the new black, it seems we also want high value and something that looks amazing. For a graphical breakdown of it all come here. By clicking on that link you'll also see that we have a thing for Asian cars. Fetishists the lot of you! But I shouldn’t talk, I'm so a member of that club.
So that wraps up this in-depth report into what your counterparts think of cars; they’re all schizophrenics and have a thing for Asians.
