Generation DIY: Musicians Are Doing For Themselves
October 27th 2008 01:07
As some of my more frequent readers will know, I am currently looking at members of Generation Y who are taking the life into their own hands and blazing their own trail in their chosen fields. Today's feature has us focusing on Thom Hendry, a pop rock experimentalist from Adelaide whose avalanche of ideas are completely self-funded and designed to surprise people. Yes, he is in the middle of a turf war with the Dance Music Army, but rather than backing down, this one man and his guitar are standing their ground.
Our musical soldier has his sound factory set up within his home base. Nature provides little inspiration for him, he prefers to draw his arsenal from little life experiences and melodies and phrases that blend together to create the avalanche of surprising sounds mentioned above.
Once the sound waves are assembled, a testing ground must be found- a feat made difficult by the fact that most of the would-be fans gather in locations which are 'dominated by the dance music scene'. Still, locations are found and gigs are played. This is made possible largely through Generation Y's main tool for everything, the internet. As Hendry describes it, 'it is the one thing that has happened in the past 10 years that is helping bands get noticed'. And noticed he will be. If you'd kindly head over here , you can hear an array of dark and sexy guitar riffs the go well with something that's been missing from the music scene for far too long- a voice that conveys emotion!
But remember, I said Hendry is an experimental artist, so please don't think that's all he has to offer.
If you're looking for something slower but not blander, Hendry is still your man. If you're in need of vibes with tones of desperation, confusion and being uber cool, please do yourself a favour and check out Thom Hendry. Go on, I'll even stop typing so you're no longer preoccupied. See ya.
