Teen's party with child porn and $20 000 worth of damages was 'best party ever'

January 18th 2008 00:18
This story was big news in Australia and from what I've read it seems it made international headlines as well. What I'm referring to is a 16 year old boy who deiced to throw a party while his parents were on vacation. 500 people ended up coming to the unauthorised party that turned into a riot that caused $20 000 worth of damage to neighbour's and police property. The teen did not claim responsibility, saying he could not control all 500 patrons, ran away to the beach when his parents came home and yesterday was taken into custody in regards to child pornography being present at the party/riot. The teen 'cannot be named for legal reasons', but for days prior he was referred to by his name -Corey Delaney, so what's up with not naming him now is beyond me.

So why am I blogging about this? Well this kid is 16, so he's in the grey area of what is considered Generation Y and in any case I wanted to know hat my peers thought of the issue.

There are some at think Corey 'is a bloody legend' loving that he showed no remorse, refused to remove his glasses during an interview 'because they're famous' and praise him running away from home so that he didn't have to face his parents. To them, it was indeed the best party ever. They're not particularly interested in the damage caused to property or picking up the bill. They also seem to be into child pornography.

Now normally this would be the paragraph were I'd present the opposite view, but there is none. In all my replies, not one person wrote back saying they were troubled by the teen's behaviour. This then presents me with a number of questions.

Have any of you heard of empathy? Neighbour's had their property damaged and the kid's parents have been caused a Hell of a lot of grief. How would you like it if you worked hard, saved up and bought something like a house or a car; you paid for it, you maintained it and then some tool comes along and wrecks it. They’re not sorry so your property has been damaged and you'll be out of pocket again to repair it.

Next we have the issue of throwing things at police and their vehicles; are you mad? What posses you to attack a law enforcement body? That is incredibly antisocial and you may just grow up to be criminal. If this is something you aspire to, the best think that could ever happen to you would be sterilization so that you can’t pass on your faulty genes.

And finally the issue of child porn. If you view this as 'just a bit of fun' there is something seriously, seriously wrong with you. This is not fun or acceptable in any way and if you think Corey & co. are legends for being in possession of this you are just as bad as them. You are a paedophile. You're an ugly, ugly person. You are a disease. The greatest thing you could ever do would be commit suicide.

What seems to be missing is a moral compass based on something other than their own dictates; that compass comes with adopting the ten commandments or the ten suggestions or some other guide to ethical conduct as a code to live by.

The problem Wynona is that someone needs to offer instruction and encouragement for holding to a code of conduct that becomes a moral compass which is acceptable to the rest of society, and many parents have abdicated that role.

A very emotive issue for sure, possibly your last sentence is a bit harsh, but if thats how you feel thats how you feel.

You are a disease. The greatest thing you could ever do would be commit suicide.

I am still scptical about the Porn part, the cynic in me couldnt help thinkng that is was possible the police just wanted to charge the guy with something because his attitude wa soooooooo WRONG. anyhow, time will tell.

We have to remember this guy is a KID, he is 16 and clearly doesnt understand life and the repercussions of his selfishness.

I think we all went to a few wild parties at that age, I myself remember going to a "house wrecking" party because the Girls parents had sold the house, people were seriously smashing the place up, they neglected to think about the poor buyer.

I am not saying what he did was right but he can't be held solely responsible for gatecrashers etc.

Anyhow, I always enjoy your posts, happy Friday.

Yes, I admit I was just writing what sounded good by the end of it.

House wrecking party? Good God!

I also acknowledge that he indeed cannot control all 500 guests. Also he is just a kid, mentally anyway. No mature adult would run away from that- scary or not, you have to face the music. I would very much like to see him at least billed for the damage, I suspect this will contribute to making him the big man he thinks he is.

Thanks for the replies.

You can't hold him accountable for having 500 people come over his place in an online advertised party. Sometimes no one shows up sometimes 100 shows up, in his case 500 showed up. It's just the way things are.

His behaviour? No less despicable than the medias glamouring of him, like that ACA host interviewing him demanding an apology 'to us'. Us as in you me and her. He owes no apology to Australia, he hasn't started any wars or anything of the sort. His arrogance is probably caused by the media unfairly targetting him and turning him into a sort of anti-hero. He's here, being like this, and they're eating it up.

When it comes down to it all worse has happened in parties with far fewer poeple. Having said that he should not be comended nor condemned for what happened. The $20,000 worth of damages, the distress caused, all that was literally just coincedence. IF he had planned to have 500 people come over then sure, he's guilty of something, but as far as it goes he did no worse than advertising a garage sale, granted he was unfortuante enough that 500 people came over.

also I'd just like to add that the greatest shame that has been brought upon this nation is how they continue to trust the media.

The talk of child porn is probably the better example, the police are not arresting Cory over possession of child porn but two people who attended the party. Yet suddenly it's Cory to blame for it.

In any case these knee jerk news reports should not be at all dignified by being read or seen or heard. The media has one again shown just where our society stands and has again shown why we are the real suckers in all this complete and utter bullshit not because it happened but because we gave more than five minutes of a look into it.

Damn that was pretty harsh what you wrote towards the end. Very bitter, very angry, I love it!

On the topic of this punk I think he should be held responsible for the chaos his little party caused but at the same time he can't really control 500 people. Then again why the hell would you invite 500 people over to a party anyway?

I will give him credit in sticking up for himself towards that bitch of a reporter. The way she is trying to treat him looked like a teacher telling off a student and it was pathetic. If the kid wants to look like an idiot just leave him look like an idiot. In the end, the reporter was made to look like a fool the way he put her down with his smart-ass remarks. It's a pretty funny video if you watch it.

He should take some of the blame but not all of it and I can understand why he would be targeted for the damages. It was his party, they were his quest and they caused a lot of mess. If you can't find the people responsible nail the guy who organized the party. You have a party at your house you're the one who is cleaning up the next morning. This kid needs a good slap in the face and needs to clean up his mess.

I agree with both of you that the reporter could have been more mature instead of getting into a back and forth with him.

The media attention too, I agree had been glorfying him so expect repeat parties I reckon.

He stated in an interview after the one he was on for ACA that he was planning another party a few weeks after the huge one he just threw. With the HUGE media attention you know there's going to be more than 500 teens showing up to that...

Yes I saw that, he said he would hold it at a hall or something, so I guess that's one thing to be greatful for.
