The internet makes us violent?

April 10th 2008 01:27
So apparently girls are now fighting like boys and it's the media's fault. I'm not going to turn this into a rant about sexism but God knows I'd like to. I'm here to put forth the case that what we watch is to blame for a rise in teen girl violence. Seriously, Google it- I did.

There’s this perfectly plausible reason floating around too, it goes something like

"Women in television are now allowed to be law enforcement agents, spies - like in ‘Alias’ - and other roles previously left to men."

If you want to read the 'article' that came from click this.

Women are now 'allowed'? It's not a privilege fool, the 2 waves of feminism were before our time, we were born into a world were equal rights are a damn expectation. And if it's TV that makes females violent, what does it for men? Book reading?

Furthermore, I have an exceptionally long link to a story of a girl being assaulted so severely by 6 other girls that she had concussion and lost some of her hearing and vision of the left side. If you Google stuff like "Florida", "Victoria", "cheerleader" and "beating" you'll get a bunch more links where the victim’s parents say myspace.com and YouTube are 'the devil'. The assailants are also said to have shown to remorse and joked among each other after being arrested.

This time it's the internet’s turn to be blamed. Apparently girls in particular a filming such acts to get their 15mins of fame and it’s girls as well that are being desensitised by watching these clips.

Really? Seriously? Well why don't we all just head for the hills because at any one time around 50% of the people around us will be female and thus be desensitised to violence and under the influence of pack mentality?

So I’m guessing that you’ve picked up on the fact that I don’t like this issue being treated like it’s abnormal because it’s girls doing the fighting. I’m also under the impression that you see I don’t agree that TV, the internet etc are what’s behind it. What are your opinions?

I think we've reached a point where people just want to blame acts of violence on something other than the actual person. No one wants to assume responsibility anymore.

I think women can easily be as violent as men - we shouldn't be surprised that a bunch of girls are capable of this...

I hear you.....Violence is violence, it is no more or less disturbing or surprising just because it comes from a woman......

It's not media, it's not males or females, it's not anything other than choice. You can choose to sort out problems in an educated adult fashion or you can behave like an animal, and if you are old enough to know right from wrong then your old enough to make that choice.

I agree with Aimzster. People should start taking responsibility for their actions. And maybe parents should also take some part of responsibility, instead of blaming tv, videogames, MySpace and whatnot.

Either gender is responsible for personal actions, and should suffer the consequences for inappropriate conduct Wynona.

I do see both points of view but I'm leading towards the side of the men. Women are supposed to be very beautiful and proper and fighting and things like that only ruin their image and popularity. Just my feelings.

Oh I'm with you on this one. Particularly with people blaming the tv and internet. Oh man, I'm SO sick of the internet and tv being blamed for everything!!!

You know what, people have always been violent. Ancient Romans feeding Christians to tigers? Not the most G rated show you're ever going to see.

And please, women are easily as violent as men. Remember the saying Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned? It didn't come about for no reason.

Perhaps generally women may not be as physically violent as men at times. But seriosly, women can be way more vicious than guys. A guy pisses off another guy, he might get a punch in the face. You piss off a woman and she is going to her best to destroy his social, private and professional life if she can.

"Women in television are now allowed to be law enforcement agents, spies - like in ‘Alias’ - and other roles previously left to men."

That's one of the most inane sentences I've read for quite a while.

There is always something to blame, the internet, TV, video games, movies. Because there was never any violence before the advent of any of these...

Wyonna,

I read a fair bit on this malady and can see why TV and internet are blamed... they have removed the 'common enemy' and not replaced it with anything physical.

Humans are physical beings... we need movement... an idle mind is the devils playground is it not?

The common enemies of ; hunger/hunting, survival/defending, and celebrating our survival from those common enemies (like the dinosaurs or warring neighbours, harsh weather and bad crops) with rituals and lots of /dancing for victories won ... are mostly gone... we don;t welcome our men home to the fire and hearth as victors anymore... for the most part they have become idle slobs who shun work and prefer to make love to a bottle in front of the TV or internet, than their women - who for the most part, now value life as a $6,000 payout from the government more than the miracle it is, not to mention the privilige of being the bearer of that life ...

Where is the purpose in our compartmentalised "Alias" lifestyles, where love means nothing more than a quick one night stand to emulate the one-week romances of our TV heroes, or the thrill of the chase across ciber space without the commitment of a lifetime to add weight to it.

What can we become without solid physical activity to offset our hard won freedoms and rekindle the joy de vivre..?

Perhaps fighting dinosaurs would have truly been more fun for both sexes? Or perhaps it is all simply a part of evolution and now we come to the part where having dessimated our resources, we prey on each other... to the point of returning full cycle to where we began - in the jungle - albeit a concrete one?

I am not surpised that women continue to emulate men under these condiitions, most have lost the ability to 'feel' at all... what is a girl to do when there is a machine doing everything for her ... so much time on her hands...

A very interesting post Wyonna, one that touches on the very deep socilogical problems of living the American /Colonial / Democratic Paradigm in the Third Age (the age of technology, information and affluence) .... I will be thinking about this for days to come ...

cheers.

Lilla ...
