Racial Stereotypes For The New Generation
November 15th 2008 01:43
The human race amazes me; on one end we have iPods and internet dating and on the other we have being the victim of sexual assault as a crime and continued use of racial vilification despite our growing trend of globalisation.
In Australia particularly, White Man said the land belonged to no one, i.e. it was terra nullius, then we said Aborigines have smaller brains than Whites and then we proceeded to view Asians as the threat which prompted the slogan "populate or perish". Not content with this, we implemented the White Australia Policy, after which we jumped on the Islam/People from Asia Minor are terrorists band wagon. Along the way we also deported islanders and continued oppressing the indigenous population. Phew, all that might have been quite exhausting, not only on the Average White Man, but also on the populations that we have left to be xenophobic towards. Oh wait look, we forgot Africa! How did we do that? No matter, let's start pointing out why Africans don't belong in Australia.
In particular, I'm thinking of the Sudanese community in Australia who are mainly located in the Melbourne region. These people are largely displaced war refugees fleeing the genocide in their country, mostly in the Darfur region. They have however, been in the spotlight several times since 2006 when it was claimed that they are a violent and unintelligent bunch.
The story is like any other you hear about with ethnic violence. I could have included any number of reports and articles on the matter but I think one should suffice. Basically the immigrants are said to be bored and unemployed. Some say this is because they are discriminated against based on the colour of their skin while the counter agreement is that they do not want to work.
After this, there are some highly publicised violent scuffles and once the police get involved some say there are ethnic gangs that threaten to take over the town while some claim to police avoided the issue for fear of appearing racist and finally we have those that say the immigrants are being unfairly portrayed. Pardon my bored tone if you picked up on it, it’s just that I've seen this type of thing played out so many times, it's hard to feel anything anymore.
I was however, pleasantly surprised to learn that the University of Western Sydney (UWS) is embracing its Sudanese refugees and committed $80 000 to the Sudanese Learning and Literacy Alliance (SLLA) which aims to developed the English skills of this community and help them integrate into mainstream Australian society. Click for more info.
So it appears that not everyone is looking down their nose at this group of immigrants- too bad this tolerance is not nearly as publicised as its intolerant counterweight.
