How much of this 'sleep' thing are you getting?
October 22nd 2007 10:23
In an article I read somewhere (this can also be read as 'I made up this statistic') that an adult should have 7-8 hours sleep per day. Certainly I don't get that amount, I have insomnia. Quite a few of my friends don't get anywhere near that amount because they're total party animals and some get much more than that for reasons unknown. Well, they could due rehearsing for the part of Sleeping Beauty. But seeing and I couldn’t think of anyone in any of my circles that gets this amount of sleep, I wondered what the rest of Generation Sleep Deprived do when they should be rejuvenating their batteries.
There is a very good chance that they are finishing (or in some disturbing cases) starting their assignments. Just because they've had the better part of 11 weeks to make a dent in their 'To Do' pile doesn’t mean they have. They haven’t failed an assessment task yet so their strategy seems to be working. While some stress and vow to never leave things to the last minute again, others cruise by planning to start as assignment on the very day its due- even if this is right after a big night out. Assignments and sleep time seem to go hand in hand but don't ask me why we can't seem to work unless the city is asleep and the deadline is less than a day away.
Think poor or non-existent planning skills can't be the only reason we're quite lacking in the sleep department? Well you're quite right my dear; it seems the night is reserved for better things. There are birthday to be celebrated, TV shows to be watched, family to be interacted with (or avoided) and conversations that cannot happen at any other time because everyone is somewhere else during there day. What this means is that evening becomes catch up and relax time rather than I'm going to isolate myself from all things social be going to bed time. Yes, certainly we'll be feeling it in the morning but when you're on the pone going on about who just got fired or holding your breath for that one crucial kick you really couldn't care less about how many hours of sleep are deemed necessary for normal brain activity.
And then there are the worriers among us. The bills must be paid. I have one day left before the deadline and that crucial phone call still hasn't come through. What if I was too harsh and unprofessional with that person and they end up killing themselves because of me? Oh screw my diet I have no time for it now! Did I lock the back door? I think so, no I don't I have to go check. Hours and hours of just laying there stressing, going back and forth with what ifs and causing ourselves trepidation over things that are out of our control. Sure you may nod off in the early hours of the morning but those 3 hours sleep won't exactly do much for you when you have to face all your problems in real life the next day.
Well Generation Sleeping pills, exactly what's stopping you from going to bed now? It certainly can’t be this post; you’ve just finished reading it.
