A generation of diary keepers
November 10th 2007 05:54
When watching the news and seeing reports of murders and suicides, I have been surprised at the amount of times that the young people involved have kept a written record of thier thoughts and plans. Now, it could be extrapolated from that statment that I think members of Genration Y that keep a log of thier life have a predisposition to violence but that is not what I'm inferring. After thinkg about all the persons I know that write their thoughts somehwere, it occured to me that Gen Y in general likes to record its brain waves.
Why blog? Well I figure I'll use myself as the most prominent specimen and move on from there.
When I first started my personal blog (no it is not this one) it was just something to do. For about 2 weeks I updated it everyday because it was my newest toy and I loved playing with it. This of course didn't last forever and now, 3.5 years later, my blog is an intergral part of my life and I post in it as comprehensively as possible because I want to please my readers. It's rare that an unknown person should comment on my postings but that doens't stop me from feeling as if I'm in the internatinal spotligtht when I'm typing up an entry.
The beauty of my blog being an interface and not a real face is that I can be as open and frank about embarassing, hurtful situations and not have to see people laugh at me or squirm in their seats for me. I can get things off my chest and make some sort of contibtion to my readers although admittedly I have no idea what that is unless they choose to comment.
I seem to not the only one that writes to have somewhere to pour their thoughts and feelings out. The not so archaic method of putting pencil ot paper is still alive and well and contrary to popular belief, is not a realm dominated my females.
Certainly it may seem 'gay' or 'weak' etc for a male to possess a written diary, but if it's something no one else knows about, what's the harm? Male, female or in between, there's still a need to confide in someone and if that someone doens't exist, a something will suffice. Confess and be cleansed or something along those lines. Basically the world and its situations seem a little less scarrier once they've been plotted out on a screen or a piece of paper.
And of course there are record keepers among us.
Those that want to look back in X years time and compare how much they've grown or re-live memories by reading their detailed descriptions. Either for themselves or for the world, there are those that want to record their time on the earth thus making their mark on the planent just a little more pronounced.
Have I missed any reasons for recording one's life? Want to share a thought or story? Please go right ahead by clicking the 'comment' button.
