The nightlife in Moscow
October 2nd 2007 09:15
Because this little Groove Terminator's research facilities are currently located in the Land Down Under, quite a few of my posts have been about the lives of Australia's Generation Y. Unfortunately, such geographic limitations have resulted in this blog reading like a manifest of things young people do in Oz rather than a true cross section of what Generation Y thinks and does around the world. But fear not my lovelies, for I have seen the error of my ways and this morning I set out to add some international Research Rodents to the lab's collection! After coming back to check the traps this afternoon, I discovered quite few mice of the Moscowvite variation had fallen for the pie in the hole covered by some shrub trick, and so today's post will be about what young people in Russia's fair capital do once the sun goes down. Now you be a good reader and amuse yourself here while I go lay the traps a' new for some more exotic delicacies. Toodles!
Ah, Moscow! With a population of 20 million and a founding year of 1147BC, it is the most populace of any European city and quite a bit older than some countries. Never mind the revolutions and famines, all this time and human capital has resulted in Russia's capital being a 24 hour city, with traffic jams just as likely at 2 in the morning as 5 in the evening. This is life dear audience, life that explodes in a celebration of itself the second the sun goes down. The darkness brings a sense of equality, it levels pride and position and all who roam the streets in its presence become united under a mystique that only the darkness can bring.
As creatures of pure instinct, evening Moscowvites seek out nightclubs in their hunting packs of three or four and camouflage gear of glitter and shimmer. Moscow is the nightclubbing world's second in command; with 1000 nightclubs in the country's capital, it is outdone only by London. Should you ever find yourself out in the open once the club goers of this fair city begin to emerge, I strongly suggest staying calm, and doing everything possible to blend in with your own kind. Sound difficult? Fear not my dear; I've done the hard work for you.
If you're a little intimidated by the city or the club goers in general, you may want to check out Ballentine's Bar. Reputed to be the friendliest of all Moscow's nightspots, it's frequented by Russian Gen Yers and it's trade mark beats are House and R 'n' B.
Or, if the ultimate one stop party destination is more to your liking, you might want to head for a place the locals know as B3. This gem of a destination is situated at lot no. 8 Bolshaya Sadovaya (Garden Ring) and has 4 floors that provide a cinema, pool rooms, a cafe, restaurant, and dance floors that play quite literally everything.
Looking for a slightly more traditional fix of Russian life? Why not make your way to the Bolshoi Theatre has everything from classic ballet to contemporary plays and the current music director, Alexander Vedernikov, is working tirelessly to put on some truly spectacular displays performances.
Not feeling up to running with the clubbing elite or sampling Russian high culture? No matter, it's everything else to the rescue! I'm not kidding, Moscow has 24 hour grocery stores, vets, mechanics- even book stores that hold special events in the dead of night. Chases are, if it's open in the day light, it'll be doing the same in the moon light. To see the tip of the iceberg of what's on offer, click this.
Moscow come alive at night with a celebration of all things lively and a generation that have not known economic recession or hunger. An ode to all things awesome, Moscow’s Gen Y is made of weathered professionals of this planet’s ultimate nightlife experiences.
