Marketers Are Cornering Generation Y

October 29th 2008 13:04
When I need a little extra information to add to a post, I head for a search engine and type in my topic-specific key words. This brings up a number of results from various sources and differing stances on Generation Y. One thing that consistently pops up, are sites that offer ways to market to Generation Y. These sites are over-represented on my results page- they present a dissected views of us; what we like, what we don't what's trendy among us, what gets our attention, the list goes on! Well, they're web publishing will be their undoing, because I'm going to expose their view of us, I won’t allow us to become sitting ducks to these devious marketers.

This particular article tells managers that Generation Y is not used to failing due to 'abolished failing grades or lowered the standards for passing grades'. They suggest that we be 'mentored' (a fancy word for brain washed) and taught that 'we are not entitled to never-ending success'. I'm not trying to draw attention to the message they're trying to send, I'm aiming to highlight the fact that these bastards are banding together and sharing information about us and we'll be dead in the water if we don't also band together and do something about it. If we just sit around and let them keep doing this, we'll be helpless in the face of their marketing campaigns/ work demands/ social constraints. Damn it they're profiling us and we're sitting around twiddling our thumbs, oblivious to the situation!

The Marriott and Hilton Hotels are trying to draw us in my adding gym equipment to their list of offerings.

10 Strategies For Attracting Gen Y Employees Into Your Company.
You know you're screwed when your behaviour is easily condensed into 10 easy steps to get you hook, line and sinker.

The list could go on but I would indeed be here all night. Suffice to say the enemy has been toiling in the shadows and we can’t afford to be idle any longer.
