What lifts you up?
April 7th 2008 08:29
Seeing as I crushed your hope and made you feel like an insignificant speck on the face of the planet with my last post, I think it's only fitting that I return and build you up once more. What am I on about? I'm here to tell you about all the things that we young people marvel at and find joy in. I'm going to try to make you feel better.
Accomplishments and a sense of achievement.
You sweat and you toil and sweat and toil some more. You plough through a task and finally, you end it and you put it behind you. Go you; you've conquered your own Mt. Everest. The fact that you had to work for your accomplishment makes it all the more important to you. If it's something you detested but needed to get done, you feel liberated and either collapse in a heap or develop the urge to celebrate like the word is ending... maybe both. If it was a labour of love, to pull out an old saying, like training for an event, finishing a race, placing 1st, getting your medal etc makes all the pain and early starts worth it. Accomplishments lift our spirits in a way that only success can.
Hugs are pretty good at making us feel better too.
Ah the hug, that universal symbol of human connection. If you've gone to pieces over something, hugs can somehow make you feel better. It's like the warmth of the other person makes its way inside you. A simple gesture, but oh so appreciated. Then there are the hugs that re-enforce connection between people. No one needs to be upset for it to happen, it's just re-enforces your closeness. However considering you need to be close to someone to hug them, that's kind of a no-brainer. Oh whatever, I shouldn't have to explain to you why we hug, it should be something you've experienced and thus know all about. Oh look, this paragraph is a decent size now- I can move on to the next one.
Little things.
Tiny, tiny things like noticing you've got natural highlights in your hair, or taking note of nature just for a split second and noticing you can smell that it's about to rain. Tiny little favours like other people going slightly out of their way to find you a contact number or pick you up from a location. Tiny little pleasant surprises are quirky and nice and unique and special and spare you from all that is mundane with their pleasantness. You feel even better because you noticed something so small- something you weren't looking for.
But I am rabbiting on, so I will heave it here for today.
