The hobbies of tomorrow's decision makers

October 20th 2007 09:34
I know what you do during you spare time and it makes me sick, so to balance out that awful sight I went in search of what the rest of Generation Y like to do with their time off. Crouching in the bushes, camera in hand and camouflaged gear on, I began to document what my contemporaries get up to when they think they're alone. Hang on- is this my day I'm describing or yours?

It seems there are a fair few artists among us ranging from those that scribble on the back of note books to those that make highly thoughtful cards for birthday celebrations.

Drawing, long renowned for its ability to block out exceptionally boring yet oncoming 'information' and being the next best thing to actually performing the acts depicted, can also be a means of earning money and admiration from viewers. Some Gen Yers will put HB pencil to A4 paper in an attempt to sketch their dreams for money making purposes while other just have pretty images they'd like to see with something other than their mind's eye. Whatever the reason, drawing remains a popular wind down activity among the barely participating participants of institutionalised learning.

Flowing on from the world of drawing like spilt paint form its container, we come to the realm of visual arts in general where some like montages, some are fashion designees and some are ever so addicted to spray paint. Whatever, art remains the main escape for those of an 'anything is possible' mentality. Now, if I could just convince the prosecution of that...

Not one to delve into the paint head on? Well for several reasons, me neither, but if we're not creating gluing and texturising, what are we doing? Well the word sport comes to mind and it has been stretched to encompass all things ranging from kicking a soccer ball around with friends to playing professional cricket. It's healthy, relaxing and builds your social network- you can't lose! It varies from being rather cheap i.e. just the price of a ball and/or sport shoes to rather more elite private gym facilities and it can be adjusted to suit all price ranges, taste and physical state. I cannot praise the sensationalism of sport enough so I'm going to have to stop here. If you get what I'm on about, fine, if you don't, oh well.

So what's in store for these leisure activities in, say, 10 years from now Well, some of us (the minority most probably) will pursue these dreams and make careers out of them. Around 68% of us will still pursue these activities as hobbies only while a few of us will fall off the band wagon totally and have disregarded these activities all together. Ah well, each to his own.
