Generation Y- the view from the neighbour's yard

September 12th 2007 08:19
It used to be all about Generation X; they are the most divorced generation to date and they had their feminism and social rights movement... or something... but anyway! It's not all about them any more, no sir-ee, it's Generation Y's turn to live in the spotlight- or is it? See Gen Y ended in '92 and Gen Z ended in '06, so this means we're in the 1st year of Gen Whatevertehell. What whatever, they're not even a year old so they're not a threat to world domination- yet. Gen Z, on the other hand are out of their dippers and making more regular appearances at the concerts I frequent. I've decided that it's time we meet our neihgbours, meaning I want to now what Gen Xers think of Gen Y, and what Gen Y think of Gen Z ('cause Gen Zers [IMO] just sounds weird).

Well, Gen Z it seems isn’t too put off by Gen Y's spotlight hugging ways.

Alright, they are somewhat annoyed by our constant plugs-in-ears state that we sport while crossing the road, being told to do the dishes and at social events that demand interacting. Fancy that, social events that require socialising- now I've heard everything. They seem to think not having MP3 players on at all times might reduce the amount of times we say 'huh?' Poor dears, they must also still think the world is flat.

They do however, admire our ability to do stuff. You know, actually program an MP3 player, set this thing called the TV to record and also how news savvy we can be. True, there are some of us that have no clue what's going on outside our handbags, but there are the others who use the internet and their newly hooked up satellite TV to view the world and all its developments.

So we haven't got too much of a bad wrap from Gen X but now that it's our turn to discuss Gen Z, do you think we can return the favour? Not likely.

When I asked my peers to tell me what they thought of our successors, the vast majority said they are dressing acting and beyond their age and this has earned Gen Z the unofficial name of 'prostitots'.

What are tweens? They are children aged 9-12. What is marketed to them? G-strings, midriff tops and sexuality. Case in point- if you ever catch an MTV award ceremony, check out how many pre-teens are screaming at their crushes in heavy makeup and enough jewellery to make them prime suspects in a robbery or two. Members of Gen Y wonder why there are 8 year olds that flat out refuse to leave the house for school without applying makeup and why G-strings are being made to fit bloody 9 year olds!

Gen Y also have a problem with the lack of respect they are shown.

Okay yes, certainly our generation has a few goons that struggle to pronounce 'thank you', but we have noticed arrogance in the alphabet's final generation when they demand rather than politely ask and when they look at you like some obscene creature for using the internet to find out about world events rather than the latest fashion trend.

If anyone out there thinks Gen Y were waaay too materialistic, hold on to you topès as Generation Z sweep through.

Feminism came way before Gen X Wynona....sorry to burst your bubble....and social rights as well.

We were nihilistic.....desperate..... sad.....troubled.....we grew up with baby boomers for parents so had nothing to rebel against. We saw Nelson Mandela freed from gaol, the Berlin Wall come down, the introduction of AIDS as a world epidemic, we had grunge music, MTV, the death of Kurt Cobain and Jeff Buckley and we started to have to pay for our education (in Australia it used to be free!). We can't afford our own houses, half of us don't want to have babies.....so I'm wondering how big Gen Z will actually be....given that they'll be the children of X-ers....

If they're a step beyond Gen Y - then I think they will not only know what they want (like Y) they will demand it more than you guys. If they're influenced by X-ers though, they'll probably be too broke or depressed to get it for themselves. Our whole lives will probably revolve around them.....scary thought.

Cool post.

Cheers

When viewed in relative terms, the gains in gender equality between the 60s and 90s are markedly different.

The boomers were campaigning for equal human rights, whereas the X-ers demanded parity in the areas of career (money, equal opporunities). It's supposedly the era in which the glass ceiling was smashed!
Not forgetting the domestic front. We saw the emergence of the SNAG and the DINKs.

As for this old X-er, no kids! I have some Y and Z cousins, but I fear the prosperity enjoyed by X and Y may not be there for Zs by the time they enter the workforce.
Everything's pointing to another recession, or worse.

Nice work, Wynona

Wouldn't Gen. A follow Gen. Z? What age is Gen. Z 'up to?' I think there is a greater difference between X and Y, than there is between Y and Z. For example, my little bro. aged 12 (Gen Z.) plays computer games, uses the net, watches TV; the same as I did at that age. The main difference I see is the quality. Technology was so less advanced back when I was 12, the Internet was only used by geeks and University .. geeks. Nowadays you almost 'need' the internet.

Personally, I really don't like it when 'that' happens. I like being underground. I like being a fan of Röyksopp. I liked the old 'underground' internet. Everything seems to be becoming 'normal.' You can get a labia reduction, probably in your lunch-break. I wouldn't recommend it though.

HG.

Gen X'ers aint even begun to fight yet.....the Baby Boomers created the mess and we are galiantly tryingto fix it for the Gen y'ers...

Very hot topic here, could get nasty, it is better to accept than to judge...just a little gen X wisdom

The beginning of the 1900's had the Silent Generation, then I think the Baby Boomers then Gens X, Y, and Z. Y and Z were just named to flow from gen x; all the others were named to describe their trademark/s. Also x, y and z had 15 yea spans but the other 2 were longer 'cause things were not developing as quickly.

Gen z is '92 to '06 so the oldest ones would be 15.
