Happiness In Simplicity
November 1st 2008 09:26
Generation Y- the generation that can't leave the house without a phone, a collection of keys, various forms of payment and an internet connection. The demographic that has music and movies on demand and must be contactable, updated, 'on', every single second of every waking day. We're the thrill seekers and the fashion victims that consume innovation at break-neck speeds and are forever reaching for the latest of something, holding onto it long enough to glimpse it before spotting something newer to pursue. Who'd have guessed we really want happiness and that this is something we find in simplicity- in good company.
We constantly indicate that we would prefer experiences over objects because these would make us happier. A holiday on a shoestring budget, dinner and a movie with friends, going to the local club or pub and checking out the music- simple activities that make us happiest. At the end of the day it seems we'd prefer to lead a good life and look back fondly on our memories rather than count stock in a house that resembles a warehouse of once-cutting edge purchases. Out gadgets are just distractions, something to tide us over with voice messages and pictures until we can see those sights for ourselves and e-hugs and become real hugs. Hmmm, for all our supposed materialism, it seems we’re still primitive at heart.
