Our drug use
January 12th 2008 02:10
I'm actually surprised that I haven't blogged about Gen Y's drug culture earlier considering how drugs and youth are viewed to go hand in hand. Well, a few days ago I put the call out to my Research Rodents to let me in on any thoughts and stories they have in relation to drugs and drug use and I was surprised to hear we're not all out of our mind on drugs and that we don't live from hit to hit.
These 'results' are from Australian Gen Yers. I am planning to write more broadly about drug culture worldwide at a later date.
The majority of my participants admitted to trying one illicit substance or another but none said they were regular users. Those that have experimented said they either wanted to have fun or wanted to know hat it was like i.e. curiosity. It seems they did not enjoy their foray into drug culture because they haven't been back since. They didn't enjoy their trip or had some sort of reality check and decided what they were doing was not right and haven't touched the stuff since.
That's very lovely of me to report, but exactly what kind of stuff am I talking about? What drugs have been tried and what drugs have my peers been put off? Well I didn't want to pry, so the majority chose to describe their experiences with an unnamed substance but one admitted to trying ecstasy and another to an intravenous substance. Not very informative I know, but if I pressed for the most intricate of details, I imagine I'd get no replies.
When asked what they think of drugs in hindsight, it seems they are last week's flavour. Generation Second Last in Alphabetical Order wants to warn itself that drugs are highly synthetic- gone are the days of organic hemp grown legally by farmers. Today, you have no idea what you're getting. Also, Gen Y does not seem to accept drugs as a way to have fun. There are so many other things that can be done alone, in groups and on any budget so 'fun' is not accepted in some circles as a reason to get high.
Still, there are those that start using young, become addicted and are high when their life goes down the tubes. I would have like to have written about the ins and outs of this type of drug use, but seeing as none of my participants fell into this category (luckily?) I can do no such thing.

Coffee Quip
Reading as many blogs as I do, it'd be difficult to get through the day without caffeine augmented aspirin Wynona, and when the resultant depression sets in, anti-depressants keep me from committing suicide and anti-psychotics keep me from helping others into forever sleep land.
Hot, double chocolate (with marshmallow's) quaffing keeps me happy, now that's a recreational prescription worthy of attention.

"I'm actually surprised that I haven't blogged about Gen Y's drug culture earlier considering how drugs and youth are viewed to go hand in hand."
That's the first line in the blog.
What you're talking about does not qualify as drug culture.
