Concerts and their attraction
February 1st 2008 23:55
So why is it that we pay through the nose to see bands, distortion and all, at venues that are ages away from where we live and for which we won't even have decent seats? Well the highly bizarre answer would be love. We're so completely into a band that we've joined the official fan club and driven our friends crazy with trivia about them that if we're given even the slightest chance of seeing them with our own two eyes we'll jump at it.
Well that and it's a chance to dress up. No seriously, you know there's a show in town when everyone around you had corsets, piercings everywhere and there's eyeliner on both genders. It's all about conforming to non-conformity, to quote a fellow patron and being with your kind rather than being the outsider everyone stares at. Hurrah for concerts!
Well that and the whole live experience.
Clapping along to a song while attempting to drive is dangerous, clapping along to a song while standing in a mosh pit is not. And then there's the surround sound. There is a change the band may sound like fingernails on a chalk board but we all risk it for the chance to reach auditory nirvana. Hearing your absolute favourite song bounce around in call and response type fashion between yourself and the band and speakers that can surely be heard in Alaska; surly that is worth going deaf for.
And when we're done appreciating the band we can turn our attention to our fellow patrons- is it just me or is everyone super friendly? You're squished against people and its okay. You get conversations going over outfits and find people that like the same obscure looks as you- spectacular!
Undoubtedly I could go on and on, but I think this is one of those things that cannot be done justice with words; rather, it is something you need to experience for yourself.

And you're right about people being super friendly...but that's what makes a good show. Not just the band, but the crowd too.
Love & stuff
