The Combination movie banned after waves of violence at screenings.

March 1st 2009 05:13
There is an independent film currently playing called The Combination. It is about Lebanese gang violence and it's set during or around the time of the Cronulla Riots. Greater Union cinemas have just banned the film altogether after a wave of violence at screenings of it in Sydney's Parramatta and Liverpool districts.

One incident occurred during a sold out screening at Parramatta's Greater Union cinema when a lady asked a group of men in front of her to stop talking- they responded by punching her in the face.

In a separate incident, a security guard was also assaulted for daring to ask a man to stop smoking in a no smoking area.

Greater Union staffs were generally intimidated, and at one point refused to enter the theatres the movie was playing in.

After such antisocial behaviour, Greater Union Cinemas decided to cease playing the film.

So is this what our generation has come to?

We supposed to be about individualism and expressing ourselves. We’re the generation that does things differently, but this lot who've used violence to bring censorship seem an awful lot like fascists to me.

Now again, we tend to be an individualistic bunch, but have we gone so far as to be psychologically selfish? What's up with punching lady for asking you to be quiet in a movie theatre? I mean, you can hardly claim provocation; it's not like she said your mother's looser than George Bush's grip on the English language.

What we need is a good famine causing war to give us our appreciation back.

Oh and, my source for this story was the Sunday Telegraph. Google it or something.
us our appreciation back.

If it attracts violent people then Greater Union have a duty of care to protect its patrons.

They acted in the only manner that they could.

Yes, I agree. Greater Union had no choice. It's a real pity though. Australian movies have great problems competing against American movies with much larger marketing budgets.

What these people have done has probably squashed the hopes of all those involved in the movie to have it seen by so many through the large Greater Union cinemas across Australia.

Well done guys.

That's really too bad. This film was years in the making and the producers did it tough. They must be devastated.

We supposed to be about individualism and expressing ourselves. We’re the generation that does things differently,

I thought that was Gen X?

Hi Wynona,

it's not like she said your mother's looser than George Bush's grip on the English language.
That's very funny Wynona

But I agree. It's a shame. Considering it was actually doing well at the box office and only 3 days in.

It's just a waste. The whole thing. The movie got pulled, the Lebanese community has got another black mark against it largely thanks for a rotten few.

It's a shame. It's a big shame. For a whole host of reasons.

Love & stuff
Mrs M

I think GU acted hastily and with an element of discrimination when banning the film. I for one plan to ban Greater Union in return. I will be seeing all future films at Hoyts.

To tell you the truth it was not the producers fault for assumedly making the movie 'prevocative'.He made the movie judging from his own opinions on the lifes young teenagers in the western suburbs live which was quite accurate. I personally grew up in the areas mention in the film ,and yes the environment and segregation of these young groups of teens in to races and steriotypical social norms is a great facture which largely contributes to the biuld up in testestrone greater union experienced. Showing this movie was not to highten the pride or ego of the youth ,more like the movie was made with a messege of; unless teens begin to exept each other for who they are and come to a realization they do live together and unless they committ jenoside which is highly unluckly they have to learn to get along . and one more thing most of my mates that i grew up with are hard drug pushers now not because they want to but because they where forced into it .by growing up in such a hard environment ..unless communities get together to create a much positive learning and working environment for us teens where still going to have a tought mentality ..im out peace

Hi everyone,

RubySoho , now that you mention it, it does sound like Gen X, lol maybe they just keep recycling the 'defining' features.

Mrs M , lol I'm glad you liked it.

Anonymous, After I postred this entry I saw on the news that there was violence at a Hoyts screening as well. I guess we'll all just have to wait for DVD.

Indeed what a shame for the film makers. Again, on the news I caught a litlle bit of an interview with the director and he said it's a shame the movie was banned because it wasn't about glorfying gang violence- just the opposite.

i hate the fact that they have banned it
yer there was violence but what about the other people that wanted to watch it
i want to watch it but now cause of this stupid ban i cant
most of the reporters have mention the outcome of minor fights happening in the movie
why dont you ever mesion what the aussie said why only mension what the lebo did
if you find out what preverked the anger you might actully see that its not alwas the middle eastern appearenced guy thats starting all the trouble
and if people are asking what nationality i am a proud lebanese girl who knows both sides of the story
you cat always belive what you hear because half the time its something to cover up the truth

I take it all back. You can't buy this kind of publicity. The film is still showing everywhere else in the country and at the Hoyts in Bankstown. The filmmakers will be okay. The idiots who continue to give all Lebanese people a bad name, will however, deserve what they get.

Lozii sounds like me that its people like you who are causing these fights.
You make an accusation about Australians being racial against Lebanese and claim that there was provocation. What did the old lady do?
Seems like a bunch of idiot young boys are trying to glorify what has been done and dusted. Nobody here is going on about the Lebo/Aussie "Bullshit"
Maybe if you spoke proper English we would understand what your trying to say haha

It's a shame that the movie was banned. However, I went to watch it today and it actually didn't glorify violence at all. The movie shows the fatal consequences of violence in South-Western Surburb. Mr Basha, who wrote the screenplay even said, "A lot of kids do wrong things, they make the wrong choices, the movie shows what happens if you do handle a gun." Lebanese or not, the south-west community is exposed in this film. This movie reveals the raw tension felt between the Lebanese and Caucasian community who think they "own" Australia. And claim it to be theres. But I ask you this, wasn't it the Aborignials who were the owner's of this land? However, I do believe GU had the right and the duty to ban the film as it created some people to get "big-headed" and cause them to act inappropriately. And if you must ask, I'm not Lebanese nor Caucasian.

very disgusting, isn't it - to think that any verbal provocation can result in a pack of thugs punching a woman in the face!!!! what's next, justifying genocide!!!! as for the morons (myself included) who are contributing to this shit fire, what's in it for you? Every Australian, except the indigenous custodians of this land, have only been here for under 250 years!!!!! Lebanese culture is many times that age!!!! where is the competition??!!!! Why would people try to "own" another country, when their cultural heritage is much richer than a white australian. perhaps Lebanese people are "self-hating", realising that that the civilised nation of Australia can actually talk through problems rather than using fists or weapons. Is it "pussy" to wish for peace?? FUCK STEREOTYPES - WAKE THE FUCK UP, AUSTRALIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
