Our Little Epidemic- Hands Up Who's Got Chlamydia
October 5th 2008 03:27
Is it just me, or are my titles getting evermore cruder? Well whatever, today we will be looking at the 'little epidemic' of Chlamydia that has erupted among our Generation Y compatriots.
Because I like to pretend to be a good journalist, we shall begin this walk down Infection Lane with a little bit of background so you (and I) won't need to pretend to know what I'm blogging about- we can be certain 
Chlamydia is caused by bacteria that can infects both men and women. It can be passed on through semen and vaginal secretions and will usually go to live in your cervix if you’re female or in your urethra if you’re human of the male variety.
At this point you might want to check some definitions and diagrams
A study conducted last month tells us that women at the top end of Generation Y (20-24 year olds) have the greatest concentration of this mini outbreak with diagnosed cases going from 335 cases per 100,000 people in 1999, to 1300 per 100,000 people in 2007. Ooops.
Now I don't mean to sound arrogant or unsympathetic here, but did they have lectures about sex ed. at your school? Were you taught about these little contraptions called condoms? But I digress...
Next in the firing line are females aged 15-19 and third place for most likely to get (or have and not know about) Chlamydia are males aged 20-24. Now what I want to know is, why these figure aren't even. Why are more females at risk of getting Chlamydia- are there gaggles of Chlamydia-infected lesbians running around infecting others with their age group? I mean no harm with that comment, just trying to jazz up my blog.
In any case I think you should all look into using these wonderful things called condoms, mixing that with a splash of water-based lubricant and while you're at it, head to your doctor for a free and confidential Chlamydia test.
The longer you've got it, the more serious it gets but the sooner you catch it, the easier it is to treat.
