Car Hoons The Lot Of You
October 8th 2008 09:09
Hey hey my pretty readers, nice to see you're back
In this entry we will be looking at car hoons, ready? Let's begin!
Now if you can believe this, I actually found some facts rather than generalisations about this pestilent version of a Gen Yer. According to this article, they are mostly males aged between 17 and 24, which, (unfortunately) means they fit squarely into the category of 'Generation Y'. Damn, I was hoping I could pass them on to one of our neighbours, ah well. Anyway, apart from being male and young, they can be identified by their 'cruise' that is to say, their automobile; it seems they prefer modified Holdens and Fords. Spectacular, but how many are there? Well the same article claims that in Melbourne alone there are about 6000 and this article claims Melbourne has about 3.6 residents, what does this mean? It means I need a calculator.
(6000/3 600 000) x 100 = 0.1667
Now if I've done that right, that means only 0.1667% of the population (at least for Melbourne) are car hoons. I thought it be a greater percentage... so I decided to investigate.
Now I live in Sydney but I didn't let that stop me- I surveyed some friends and colleagues and found that 1.5/10 of them were car hoons. Now as a percentage that works out as 15% which means Sydney's car hoon population is phenomenally greater than that of Melbourne's. Um, maybe you should take that statistic with a grain of salt. Oh and why is it 1.5 you ask, was someone dying when I interviewed them? No, I've got a friend that insists on overtaking everything she (yes, she) sees and also seems to drive a car that's incapable of doing any less than 70k/m... except in the presence of speed cameras, interesting. She does not (as far as I know) partake in drag races or have any modifications to her 'cruise', hence I didn’t think she was typical car hoon material.
If you have any further information (or wish to correct my calculations) please leave me a comment- your input will be greatly appreciated.

Car hoons are a big worry, they have always been around, ( think Grease the film or musical), young males do so often have this unhealthy pre-occupation with their wheels and not much sense of danger to themselves or anyone else.
Perhaps nowadays they have more expensive cars, more potential for speed, drugs may play a part, more money and less regard for the law and people's possessions.
Using those factors as criteria the problem is probably far worse, but rest assured it is not just your generation which is responsible.
And the police and courts could do with being less hesitant to act.
Let's put more order back into life, and less 'so-called' freedom.
It's a good post like all of yours seem to be, Wynona, incidentally I tried to put on a comment last night but the 'system' would not let me.

Generation Y Life
Sorry to hear about the 'system' not letting you post but it looks like it's all been fixed now?
And you make some very good points about this not being a new trend- one of my school teachers suggested males being wreckless could have something to do with getting female attention.
Oh, incidently with the police and what not, there have been proposals to raise the amount one can be fined for 'car hooning' (my phrase, not theirs) and even having cars crushed for repeat offenders.
