What gets you down?
April 6th 2008 02:50
I've got this theory that there are universal factors that affect the mood of a generation. Have I researched this theory? No, but that's beside the point- I needed a topic to post about and I picked this one so kick back and relax while I try to get this theory to pass as plausible.
Now when I say 'generation', I understand there are cultural differences and I've decided to factor these into my arguments by completely ignoring them. Is that a contradiction? Probably. I figure I'll throw an idea out there, if you can make it apply to Generation Y of a certain country, then you can take this entry to be referring to them. If you can't make it apply to a certain group of Gen Y-ers, ignore them and move on. Wouldn't I make the perfect research scientist?
Enough chit chat, I believe money worries us and leaves us feeling anxious.
Can you afford that? No. Do you need to pay the bills? Yes. Oh look you're broke. Quick, where's the credit card? Ah Hah! Oh wait, it's maxed out. But look, this one isn't. Rate rise. Rate rise again. Look, yet another interest rate rise. Don't look, your phone bill’s arrived. I now this is what goes on inside your head, don't deny it. I like totally installed fiber optic cameras while you weren't looking- you were too busy checking out that ad for debt consolidation.
You know what else digs you into an emotional hole so deep you're in danger of reaching China? The news.
A suicide bomber here, a coma patient raped there, add a sprinkling of drunks behind steering wheels and you'll be rid of your happy world out look in no time. You try to avoid the worries of the world and switch the TV off or turn the page. You think that you can block it out and save yourself from that feeling of utter hopelessness the suffering of others around the world brings you. Too bad this leaves you open to the criticisms of those that think any educated person would have their finger of the global pulse and that you're a tool for not doing so. You're not left feeling hurt and inferior because a fellow human with an impressive lexicon has hurt you with their spiteful tongue. You curl and try to wish the pain away. Maybe sleep will be kind and take you away.
And what else brings us down? Ourselves.
Look at how short her skirt is, what a skank. He can't speak the language properly, he should turn around and go home. Why are you wearing that? Oh my God you're a freak! And when you need yourself most, instead of being your own best friend you tell yourself you not good enough. The mirror only shows you imperfections and no matter how well you do at anything, all you see is how much better you could have been. Being .001 off the mark looks like a giant chasm between the aim and your achievement.
So what alleviates our sadness and frustration? Stay tuned for my next installment what lifts you up? But for now, that is all.
