Body mods

I am of course, talking about modifications or, upgrades, if you will, performed on one's body. It seems that what God gave us is not just fine and we're off to refine our shells. Well that and I got my ears pierced for the fourth time. (My first two are on top of each other 'cause I'm special like that.)
So what drives us to cut and pierce and dye in different places with different instruments? Well for me it's therapeutic.
You beg my pardon? Well, sometimes I go though stages where I'm having several bad days in a row and -don't ask me how this works- but getting more holes put in my ears helps. I know, it's not exactly logical and it's not healthy because I'm not addressing the problem but as if I care; I've been alleviated of my problems and have the capacity to wear more earrings! And I'm not alone, Christina Aguilera (who I think is part of Gen Y) gave the same reasoning for many of her piercings. You're kidding yourself if you think I'm going to find a direct quote form her, but off the top of my head she said something about the stress or whatever going away as soon as she felt the needle hit her skin. There you go, proof that I'm not a lone lunatic.
Spectacular, but I'm here to discuss reasons for body mods. Well improvement has got to be a reason. I mean you don't fix things that aren't broken so you surly wouldn't attempt to improve on a design you thought was perfect. We might think we'd look better in blonde or that our alabaster complexion is hideous and so off we trot to fix our 'flaws'. We may have great personalities and our IQs may be sky high but we know you can't tell any of that from looking at us. We need to look better, be chicer (is that a word, apparently so seeing as spell check didn’t pick it up) and shine brighter and no, we don't care if we end up faking it.
And finally we change our appearance for person reasons. You may think I'm alluding to the need to improve again but I'm not, bear with me. These are things like tattoos that are visible to all but we get to reflect that which we hold dear. These are things like parents inking their children’s names onto themselves and dear friends adopting the trademark quaff of a deceased soul. Sometimes we change ourselves to that we can keep ourselves focused and express where we stand.
