when self esteem goes bye byes

September 7th 2007 09:38
How does Generation Y view self esteem? As being exactly the same as body image, that's how. I have no clue where we got that from, but we think we're not the right shape, not the right colour, too big in the wrong places and lacking where it counts. Okay, there are a few lucky shits that are perfectly fine with every aspect of their bodies but don't worry, I'm in the process of finding their addresses and buying a shovel- they won't be bothering us much longer.

So what specifically are we seeking to fix? Well obviously for girls the 'it' thing right now is being invisible when viewed from the side, and it seems every boy has jumped on the scene band wagon, dressing in what is incorrectly labeled 'emo' clothes. Emo dear children = emotive hardcore and was founded by bands like Rites of Spring. My Chemical Romance etc are simply rock. But this is not the post for setting the record straight although I assure you the Research Rodents are hard at work putting that one together.

How do we get into stick thin shape? We go on hilarious and dangerous diets like the 'all soup' diet where all you eat is soup for breakfast, lunch and diner of course! Seriously, if someone were on the outside looking in, they'd be pissing themselves laughing at the people who can afford healthy food and unwind with some fresh air but choose to stress and eat something that smells like a concoction of the socks found on my bedroom floor.

But losing weight cannot be enough! Oh no, we must hack into ourselves- we must perform surgery and cause pain. Yes, that is what intelligent 21st century humans do.

The Asian population apparently has 'creaseless' eyes WTF? If you're not Asian, go to the mirror and look at your eyes. When they’re open, see how there's a visible bit of skin between your lashes and your actual face? No? Okay, look into your eyes and then open them really wide- see how there's a bit of skin that disappears? That is your 'crease' and apparently the lovely Asian delicacies among us don’t have this. This bothers some of them so much that they undergo operations to add this measly bit of skin to their eye lids because 'western' eyes and 'prettier'.

But why stop there? Why not get a designer vagina? Mmhhmm, if you think you could be better looking in the downstairs department, why not leaf through a catalogue and pick the right looking reproductive organ for you? Heaven forbid that you should think you're fine the way you are.

And male readers I haven't forgotten about you. 'Emo' is the thing now. You must sport something called a ‘side fringe'. You must wear skinny jeans and not have that delightful bit of flesh called a muffin top sitting above your jeans. You must also be buff because all girls like muscle definition. Not.

Look, as far as I'm concerned, I like my men with a bit of an individual thing going on rather then being the 'ideal' that's plastered anywhere that you can stick a piece of advertising. I mean come on, if you look like everyone else, who's going to want you when the guy next to you is the exact same thing?

You know what I've come to realise in my time of starving myself and thinking my nose is too big? This is me- there are things about me that I don't like that other people may or may not notice. Now, I can make these my trademark features that I and I alone can make look damn good, or I can be the slightly overweight girl with Mt. Vesuvius sticking out of her face.

Generation Y, if you insist on thinking of yourself as flawed, do us all a favour and view yourself as perfectly flawed. That thing that isn't quite right is your signature- and I suggest you use it to sign your name in the stars. Besides, you make a much better you than anyone else ever could, and if we all have enough cosmetic surgery, we can all be the ideal- great if you want to be everyone's twin, not so great if you want to be remembered.

I'm one of those people who is happy with the way they look. I'm naturally slim, some people would say underweight, but I really don't care! When you talk about 'Gen. Y' you are generalising of course, there are a group of people who see how this illusory 'movie' world in our eyes is being played out, and don't fall into the trap of 'believing in' this 'reality.' The body is just a holographic projection. Most people in the 'west' have the opportunity to eat healthily, but instead choose to poison themselves.

HG.

Indeed, Heart Guy? However you are one of the happy ones; you must be eliminated.
