Birthday Celebrations
August 22nd 2007 23:02
So, you've survived another year of this thing called 'life'. Congratulations. How do you celebrate? Goods times and doing something you, the birthday celebrant, will enjoy is clearly in order but where to go, and what activities to engage in?
Restaurants seem to be popular, but what type and what happens seems to vary.
Some cliques have a regular place they go to anytime there's an event to be toasted. The familiarity means everyone knows the location and can make arrangements to get there. Having already sampled the menu, the participants can dine confiendentley because they know ordering the caesar salad will not result in them digesting a concoction similar in taste to cockroach resin. There is something to be said about the environment also. The familiarity creates a relaxed environment for everyone to unwind. No new interesting neon signs to distract you, it's all about a good chat in good company.
Not looking to dine at your usual gastronomic HQ? Not a problem, how about the latest Chinese/Italian/Ethiopian/[insert nation here] or Karaoke food establishment? Try something new and expose everyone to a little culture.
If dining isn't up your alley, how about dressing your guests up and possibly performing?
There are a few places that specialise in the Who Done It theme, where everyone must be in character and solve the mystery. Sensational I say. It stops the conversation from fading into a lull and it gives everyone the chance to shine. We humans are strange creatures, masks and costumes seem to bring out an honesty and confidence we otherwise do not exhume.
Still in the realm of fantasy, we have dress up parties.
Middle aged men dressed up as fairies, me dressed as Scrooge and people asking why I'm not in costume- and photos. If ever you're in need of a laugh, pull out the photo of everyone in full costume boogying down. That dear readers, is pure hilarity.
But what's that, you're not a fan of the aging process? May I suggest regressing?
That's right, go backwards and redo things. There's nothing wrong with finger painting. And does anyone remember Duck Duck Goose? Oh and slinkies! It's just not a party without a slinky. It seems that childhood is associated with good times, so why not recapture some of that and also capture the fun of being full-grown but doing it anyway? Hey it was just a suggestion, I didn't say you had to.
So there is a smattering of the ways birthdays can be celebrated, but what is it that makes one variant the winner and the modus operandi that year’s that party?
It seems tradition and good times are involved. There's an undercurrent of unity and enjoying one another's company. Birthday parties are a good excuse to see people that you've been neglecting and letting others know they're special to you, awww.
And so on that note good people, I bid you farewell.

I think an mpg. of a birthday at a karaoke place would be pretty amusing too.
