Generation Y Life - January 2009

We're all just part of the herd

January 28th 2009 06:35
In the West (where we know best) we tend to be an individualistic society. We want to make a name for ourselves, have wealth to show off out status and do what's best for us. This however, does not make us a bunch of loners- quite the opposite actually. Because we are part of one society, we value the same things and strive for the same goals. We unwind in similar settings and we largely have homogenous taste in everything from clothing to food, which is why chain stores are so successful.

It is therefore unsurprising that the younger members of our ranks can be fond congregating in large herds and highly visible venues.

One such venue happens to be the gym.

In case you missed it (though I sorely doubt it) we're massively health and image conscious. Yes alright, we might splurge on junk food, but tomorrow you know we'll regret it and be off to the gym to sweat it out on the treadmill for a couple of hours. If you want to find a young person, go to a gym after work- I guarantee they'll be toning up their bods trying to out do each other out of vanity or insecurity.

Alternately, if exercise isn't your thing (although I doubt this also) you might want to go a coffee selling venue- the type that has loyalty cards. I mean all the calories that get burnt off at the gym have to come from somewhere, right? Well, they do in fact, come form the coffee and other beverages that we grab on the run to work, during a lunch break, while we're on an all liquid diet and when we don't have the time to sit and eat a proper meal... probably because we're rushing to get to the gym. That and we love free stuff, so if you want to earn us as customers, give us loyalty cards.

Hope that was insightful, but if you’ll excuse me, I have to go claim a ice coffee.

Hallmarks of Generation Y

January 22nd 2009 05:15
I often think to myself, when I and others like me look back on our lives and the world as we knew it, what will stand out? Who is our version of Marilyn Monroe and what great events shaped us like the World Wars shaped our grandparents?

I've come up with a list of what I think are Generation Y's defining feature but I'd be more than happy to hear your opinions.

We kick off with Princess Diana.

So far I think she is... not our icon, but certainly a person who we will all remember not least of all because of the way she died and the conspiracy theories that still surround her death. An intriguing figure and a much loved one judging by the outpouring of grief in the days after her passing.

Harry Potter.

Never before have I seen so may people flock to book stores which such fervour. Certainly a defining collection of books that will no doubt be well read classics for years to come.

iPods.

Not MP3 players, iPods. This particular brand has cornered the market so successfully thanks to first mover advantage, it's better known than any other. We'll be talking about iPods long after we're done talking about PM3 players.

Terrorism.

After 9/11 this world promptly entered my vocabulary and became a regular of the news, TV series plots and description so of Arabs. I know that his is one of our hallmarks and I know that we haven’t heard the last of it.

That's the list so far, any feedback or additions are welcome.

Hey it's been over a month since my last post- God I'm lazy! Anyway, the topic for today is how unintelligent my compatriots (and I) are.

I have a friend who's never heard of Islam, are you serious? Okay, you may not be familiar with its trappings, but to have never heard of the world's second largest religion? And it's not like this person lives under a rock with only limited contact with the rest of the world so how this came to be is beyond me.

And speaking of me, I must admit I'm not doing my generation any favours for you see, I can't spell. No seriously, if the government introduced a tax for using the spell check feature, I'd be paying for the whole cabinet to holiday in Dubai. I really can't spell to save myself.

To make myself feel better after sharing that less than flattering fact, I'm going to tell you about another ignoramus (thank you spell check for correcting my spelling of ‘ignoramus’)- another friend of mine.

This one shuns the news like its last year's fashion. She has no idea about even the most sensational stories that flare up from time to time, let alone complex and chronic stories. I bet you my spell check feature she has no idea Israel is currently dropping bombs on the Gaza Strip. I suspect she's never heard of said geographic location either, seeing as it's only ever mentioned on the news.

I think we’re in need of our own Enlightenment but I get the feeling most of us don't even know what the Enlightenment was the first time 'round, let alone how to recreate it for our own salvation.

I need a drink.
