Generation Y Life - November 2008

We Are Not Football Hooligans

November 28th 2008 01:36
You know what's super awesome about the internet? It like totally lets you catch up with news and current affairs form places you've never been-it's true! I like, so just finished reading an in-depth article on football hooliganism. If you don't want to do your own search form it, click here. But if you can't take the time out of your busy schedule to read that, just skim this summary blog entry of mine.

Football hooliganism is, once again, not something that Generation Y invented; it's been alive and kicking, pun intended, since 13th century England. However, while back then it was used as a way to settle disputes and whatnot, now it just seems we love a good fight and any excuse will do.

Is football hooliganism rife? No apparently. The author of the study I linked to above says that football hooliganism in England has been over researched and publicised to death (I'm paraphrasing here) and that in other nations such as Italy and Germany about 10% of a crowd will partake in rowdy behaviour and that they will do so more at away games than home ones.

Drinking plays different roles for different nationalities. Apparently, your typical drunk roligan (pun combining the Danish word for 'peaceful' with 'hooligan') is rather good natured and is not without a sense of humour.

The Italian ultras drink so little period, that alcohol is not thought to be a factor in any anti-social behaviour they display.

The Americans are a different case again, with a ban on drinking at sport venues sometimes leading to 'compensationary drinking' which is higher alcohol consumption somewhere else before or after the match to make up for the ban.

If a row does break out however, chances are it will have something to do with racism- particularly at international matches. Where? Who? And how potent is Racism? Well, that's hotly debated but all agree that racism is prevalent to some level.

So there you have it, a little bit of insight into yet another social happening that we did not create but have made our own. Enjoy your weekend.

The Prevalence Of Violence Against Women

November 23rd 2008 10:48
50% of all Australian women will experience domestic violence at least one in their lives. Fact.

The White Ribbon Organisation has released its report into domestic violence against females and quite frankly I am astounded at how common place this behaviour is. I truly thought domestic violence was a thing of the past- something we relinquished to be a civil society. Apparently I was very much mistaken and Generation Y is at that crucial time when they can choose whether or not to hold on these violent attitudes.

So, the report can be viewed here. I've complied some of its findings to give you an idea of what to expect from reading the whole thing as well as to give you an idea of the kind of society we're living in.

- A Survey of 635 high school students (male and female) found 56% of the males were 'not hurt at all' the worst kind of violence they experienced while only 9% of females could say the same.

- A third of female year 10 students said they had experienced unwanted sex.

-A male abuser will implement a number of other controlling and harmful behaviours towards his victim including threats to the victims family and of suicide, threatening to expose secrets, mind-games and emotional manipulation, isolating the victim from friends and family and telling her she is worthless but that he loves her thus leaving her feeling alone and with nowhere to go if she leaves as well as with seriously undermined self-esteem.

- Women who have been exposed to violence are more likely to develop self-harming behaviours such as substance abuse and self-mutilation and are more likely to be re-abused in the future.

The findings go on, but I think you get the point.

Why am I posting an entry about this in a Gen Y blog? Well this is what we're growing up with or have grown up with. This is the state of our relationships. No, this is not something new or specific to our generation but it is still so prevalent that I felt I needed to blog about it. I had no idea violence against women was this rife, I honestly didn't and I think that's because it's an uncomfortable subject to talk about so we all tip toe around it... and look at where that's gotten us.

Dear Generation Material Objects, I hope you don't have any plans to pay the bills or move out of home anytime soon because you simply can't afford it. See my dears, because we live in an interlinked world thanks to globalisation and comparative advantage, we find that when one financial institution topples over, it takes all its investors and business associates with it. Now, as you may have noticed, we're having a bit of a money crisis; it started in the US with sub-prime mortgages and now we're feeling it world wide.

Iceland for instance, it's top three banks have US$61-billion of debt between them, that's 12 times the size of the Icelandic economy!. Now, I'm not saying jobs will be impossible to find in Iceland, just that if they have that much money owing, I think they'll focus on paying that off before hiring more people who money will be owed to in the form of wages.

Looking to earn money in the world's largest economy? Fat chance, the US is in recession but considering this is the country that started this economic fall down, do you really want to go putting your money into it?

Okay, you decide to look for a way to earn money domestically, well, I have some advised for you.

If you're job hunting, stay away from sectors such as retail and hospitality. Why? Well people only shop, eat out and drink when they can afford to. Less people with money means less people to do these things, which means less employers in these areas will be hiring. If you want my advice, I suggest you get into industries that have inelastic demand. That is, they provide goods or services which have no close substitutes and which are necessary. Think undertaking or arms dealing. Hey two birds with one stone- get the guns, kill the people, and bury them- you could totally be a hit man with additional services! I will however, be charging a 10% commission for giving you that idea.

Warning- Blogging Will Ruin You

November 17th 2008 04:28
Hello my fellow social commentators, I'm happy to see you've survived the carnage- for now. It seems there is an enemy that lurks in the shadows which seeks to dismantle our numbers and suppress our online thought sharing. This enemy (as yet) has no certain modus operandi and presents itself as a shape shifter, attacking us from all angles and in all forms. What we do know, however, is that the enemy seeks to lower our quality of life anyway it can. For example;

Take Joyce Park and her blog Troutgirl- she made a whole 3 posts about her employer, social networking organisation Friendster and it was goodbye employment!. Why? No idea, Friendster does not comment about employee matters

The human race amazes me; on one end we have iPods and internet dating and on the other we have being the victim of sexual assault as a crime and continued use of racial vilification despite our growing trend of globalisation.

In Australia particularly, White Man said the land belonged to no one, i.e. it was terra nullius, then we said Aborigines have smaller brains than Whites and then we proceeded to view Asians as the threat which prompted the slogan "populate or perish". Not content with this, we implemented the White Australia Policy, after which we jumped on the Islam/People from Asia Minor are terrorists band wagon. Along the way we also deported islanders and continued oppressing the indigenous population. Phew, all that might have been quite exhausting, not only on the Average White Man, but also on the populations that we have left to be xenophobic towards. Oh wait look, we forgot Africa! How did we do that? No matter, let's start pointing out why Africans don't belong in Australia

People Power German Student Style

November 13th 2008 08:45
We've all heard about striking teachers demanding better pay or union organised protests disrupting CBDs to draw attention to injustices, but how many of us have heard of students striking in protest to over-crowed class rooms, not enough government funding and unreasonable work hours? Well, all across Germany yesterday that's exactly what happened.

According to one 13-year-old demonstrator, "there are not enough teachers and too many children in the classes". (Link to article)/B]). The students feel that too much is expected of them and that they do not have adequate resources to meet these demands. So, rather than gritting their teeth and putting up with it, the students took to the streets with multi-lingual banners and typical activist chants to get their message across.

Germany's Young Muslim Radicals

November 10th 2008 01:55
Okay yes, I admit it; the title of this post is alarmist and designed to get my hit count up. But seeing as you're here now, you may as well stick around for the rest of the blog.

Germany has 3.2 million Muslim citizens- the second highest quantity in Europe. Most of these people I will argue, are decent human beings that want to live a good life side by side with all their neighbours. Unfortunately, as always, there is a minority that lead disruptive lives and it is this lot that are over-represented in the media and tar their fellow Muslims with their filthy brush

Hello my loyal readers, so good of you to grace me with your company once more.

For today's offering, I've tracked down another Australian musician that's set to make an impression on the music industry all on his own. He goes by the name of Panadole and as he pointed out to me, there's another 'E' on the end of his name so there'll be no law suits for him

Last night saw me researching from the couch, that is, I caught a program about young people's attitudes towards marriage vs. De Facto relationships and I decided to poach the findings.

My absolute favourite quote from one De Facto couple was "We don't need to tie the knot; the threads of our life have woven together quite nicely". Sensational, this quote actually encompasses Gen Y's attitude towards the whole relationship thing

Happiness In Simplicity

November 1st 2008 09:26
Generation Y- the generation that can't leave the house without a phone, a collection of keys, various forms of payment and an internet connection. The demographic that has music and movies on demand and must be contactable, updated, 'on', every single second of every waking day. We're the thrill seekers and the fashion victims that consume innovation at break-neck speeds and are forever reaching for the latest of something, holding onto it long enough to glimpse it before spotting something newer to pursue. Who'd have guessed we really want happiness and that this is something we find in simplicity- in good company.

We constantly indicate that we would prefer experiences over objects because these would make us happier. A holiday on a shoestring budget, dinner and a movie with friends, going to the local club or pub and checking out the music- simple activities that make us happiest. At the end of the day it seems we'd prefer to lead a good life and look back fondly on our memories rather than count stock in a house that resembles a warehouse of once-cutting edge purchases. Out gadgets are just distractions, something to tide us over with voice messages and pictures until we can see those sights for ourselves and e-hugs and become real hugs. Hmmm, for all our supposed materialism, it seems we’re still primitive at heart
