Generation Y Life - July 2008

Get Thee Vaccinated

July 26th 2008 02:01
Who's been vaccinated for anything in the past year, hands up? Yeah that's what I thought- none of us. What's that, is that a hand in the back? Okay, yes it is, so... one person, awesome. So the majority of us haven't been pricked with a dead or weakened strain of anything which is why my throat's currently back up with phlegm from a cold I've got. Oh what an image that must be for all of you.  My point is that we aren't too concerned with vaccines.

Ask a Gen Yer about the last time they had a needle stuck into them (that didn’t have ink in it) and the majority will hark back to high school when we had that triple vaccine for one of the Hepatitis stains, Tetanus and I think Meningococcal. Now from memory you won't need a booster for those for another 10 years, so I'm not due for another six, but of those of us that are reaching booster time, who's planning one getting that done? Mmhhmm, not very many of you. And who gets a flu shot every year? Obviously not me and somehow I don't think I'm alone. We just don't think about it too often, I mean what are the chances of getting Yellow Fever? The only time we give a toss is when we're going overseas- it seems we think other countries pose a health risk. But apart that, it’s vaccine-free for me... and you.

Of all the people that I spoke to for this entry (oh alright, it wasn’t that many) only one was getting the ovarian cancer vaccine and okay fair enough- it protects against cancer, it's not like we've got a cure for that. Truth be told I was planning on getting that done, until I heard about the side effects. I've decided to take my chances and let my peers act as guinea pigs. Depending at how you look at it, I either take my health too seriously or not seriously enough.

If sloth were a sin, I'd be going to Hell- oh wait. Err, the point is, the TV station SBS is running a 6 part series on Generation Y and their thoughts on various issues, so it's like this blog on TV... only I'm in no way involved.

Well the first episode aired last night and seeing as World Youth Week or Day or whatever is currently on, it's perhaps not surprising that the topic was religion. The program interviewed Gen Yers ranging from a nun to a humanist and they spoke about their religious beliefs and what had happened to make them hold such views.

A common opinion held by just about all who participated (regardless of religious persuasion) is that the messages that religions try to send of loving one another and living under perfect justice are good and worthwhile, but the religious establishments that serve a faith seem to deviate from these messages. Those that have shunned their religious beliefs did so because they simply did not connect with the traditional rituals and felt the words they were hearing were empty. They felt that organised religion was impeding the personal and internal search for the answers to things like 'is there anything up there' and 'what is a soul'. Even those that went on to further study the religions they were brought up by said it was a personal journey because the teachings of the establishments had left them confused.

Baby Boomer sociologists who were asked to comment on Gen Y and religion labeled us 'Generation Whatever' and think that we are more lacking in apathy and more selfish than any humans before us.

Our new label is meant to reflect the fact that we will be friends and mingle with persons of all religious persuasions and because we seem to be more eclectic. The analogy they used was of a religious supermarket where one can pick and choose theories and values from multiple theologies and blend them to come up with their own divine beliefs. The danger identified in this however, is that multiple individuals that co-exist but do not share a common bond/belief are easier manipulated by governments and/or corporations because they do not have the herd to protect them. You know, strength in numbers and all that.

So, in closing, Gen Y has a tad of religiousness about it but it's mostly nothing too serious. Who wants to comment me with an opinion?

Disrespect among the generations

July 9th 2008 05:54
Because I am amazingly behind the times, I will be blogging about something that I saw about 2 weeks ago.

In Australia's 2008 season of the reality TV show Big Brother, two of the contestants were over 50. The typical 20-something year olds constantly made comments about them being 'old' and often sited this as a reason for disagreements. I was struck by how 'old' was used as a derogatory term- a feature that makes one undesirable and how the young ones frowned upon aging. I then began thinking about marketing campaigns and found it hard to think of any advertisement for pop culture items that use anyone that appears over 20 something. Biscuits are shown being devoured by a young girl who has just moved out of her parent’s house. Youngsters on trains dance while listening to MP3 players and it seems only Generation Y is interested in home phone and internet packages. Well, in Marketing Land that may be all well and good, but where I live -planet Earth- a variety of inhabitants of a variety of ages all use these same goods and services and I fail to see why they are not depicted as co-existing with my generation.

I seem to be going off on a tangent so I'll leave the marketing rant for now; the point of that paragraph was to show that there seems to be an age when one apparently slips off the face of the earth and lives a miserable existence in a hole that they’ve crawled into while waiting for death. Melodramatic? Maybe, but I'm trying to emphasize how acceptable it seems to have become to brush off 'old' people and view their age as a disease you don't want to catch.

I'm not sure if this is a new Gen Y phenomenon or if this has been going on for eons, all I know is that I've noted it among by peers and I'm not amused. If someone is indeed in a somewhat frail state due to their years of existence, why go out of your way to make life difficult for them? Are you a sadist? Why does respect not extend to the older generations purely because they are older? I feel another rant coming on...

Meh. I'm off to do something else. What are you doing?

I'm still around

July 7th 2008 01:35
When I logged in to update this blog, I was honestly shocked to see that my last entry was only 3 weeks ago- I was expecting something aroud the 2 month mark.

TodayI don't have an actual Generation Y update, I've just popped in to A- make sure my blog still exists and B- let you know that I am planning to lift my game. So far, I've been avoiding updating because I've had a lack of material (in other words I wasn't trying), I haven't had time (also known as poor planning) and last Friday I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed and I've been a bit under th weather (true, although I am getting better
